Faculty of Social Sciences Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia,is led by a Dean who is assisted by Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Vice Dean for Finance and HR, and Vice Dean for Student Affairs. They are also supported by 4 Heads and Secretaries of Department, 8 Heads of Study Programs, and supported by administrative officers, namely: Head of Academic and Student Administration; Head of Finance and HR, and Head of Assets, Facilities and ICT Subdivision.
Main Duties and Functions
Faculty of Social Sciences Education organizes Education, Research, and Community Services to prepare human resources in the field of Social Sciences Education in various types and levels of education, and social sciences for different types of expertise and professions.
Departments and Study Programs
1. Civics Education Study Program / Department
Civics Education Department specifically prepares students to become Bachelor of Education in Pancasila, Citizenship, and State Administration. Various courses such as state politics, citizenship, law, and morals are fostered and developed by this Department. Students are directed to learn various aspects of the education and teaching of state administration, citizenship, and Pancasila. Renewal in the field of civics education and teaching is discoursed and studied in depth with high professional enthusiasm and abilities, both in academic activities and community services. Civicus community, (ISSN: 1412-5463), is a journal belonging to Civics Education Department. Civics Education Department has been accredited A by BAN PT. In addition, Civics Education Department is in the process of submitting to obtain international recognition from AUNQA.
2. Historical Education Study Program/ Department
Historical discipline is classified as one of the social science disciplines, leaving behind old traditions that include it as part of the humanities. It is aimed to produce graduates of historical education competent in the management of national, world and cultural history. At Historical Education Study Program/ Department, students are practiced to think critically in discussing various historical events that occur, both in the archipelago, Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Australia. Students are also invited to analyze various problems of local history and thematic history such as economic history, local history and education. Professionally, students are also encouraged to develop skills in historical education, Sociology and Anthropology. Innovations in historical education are introduced by teaching staff in their fields as professional study material. Historical Education Department has the scientific journal HISTORIA. (ISSN: 0215-1073) which has been accredited by Sinta Ristekdikti, and FACTUM. Historical Education Study Program has been accredited A by BAN PT.
3. Geography Education Study Program/ Department
Geography Education was initially part of a B1 Course on Earth Sciences, which was established in 1961 under the FKIP of Padjadjaran University. Geography Department prepares it students to study various studies in geography and to equip them with in geography education. Actual environmental problems (physical, social and cultural) that occur in the community are analyzed in the Geography Education study program. Various technical skills related to geography and various geography education issues, both conceptual and technical praxis are analyzed and taught in depth and professionally. Most of the graduates become Geography Teachers and Environmental Education Teachers (PLH) in SMP / MTs and SMA / MA. However, there are also some graduates who work at the Ministry of Transmigration, National Coordinating Agency for Family Planning (BKKBN), the Department of Mining, and the Army Topographic Bureau. In the international academic forum, the Geography Education Department holds an International Geography Seminar (IGEOS) annually. The Geography Education Department currently runs Bachelor, Magister and Doctorate program. Geography Education Department has a scientific journal GEA (ISSN: 1412-0313). Geography Education Study Program has been accredited A by BAN PT and is currently in the process of obtaining AQAS international recognition.
4. Mapping Survey and Geographic Information Study Program (SPIG)
SPIG Study Program was initiated 2008. This study program is under the Department of Geography Education FPIPS Indonesian University of Education (UPI), running a Diploma III (D III) program. Prospective students are required to graduate from high school / Aliyah Department of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences, pass a written selection test and fitness tests, especially not color blind. The presence of this study program was motivated by the increasing need for surveyors. The proportion of lectures in the classroom (indoor) with practicum outside the classroom (outdoor) is balanced. Practicum activities consist of: Practicum Course, Excursion and Field Camp. The Lecturers are dominated by UPI Geography Education Department lecturers, others were from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and the National Institute of Technology (ITENAS), magister program (S2) and doctorate program (S3) graduates, both domestically and overseas. To improve the competitiveness of graduates in the world of work, collaboration has been and will be carried out with various institutions, such as the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), the Indonesian Surveyors Association (ISI), National Land Board (BPN), and other related institutions. Most of the graduates become intermediate surveyors in various consulting services such as Pertamina, and the Regional Environmental Management Agency (BPLHD). SPIG Study Program accredited B by BAN PT . In addition to academic activities on campus, SPIG Study Program requires students to take part in field camps and professional competency tests from the Professional Certification Institute.
5. Social Studies Education Study Program
The Social Sciences Education Study Program (IPS) was established at FPIPS UPI in 2009 with a vision of being a leading and outstanding study program realized in the form of organizing education to prepare professional Bachelor of Education in Social Studies. This study program aims to 1) produce social studies prospective teacher in social studies with comparative and competitive advantages who are able to integrate social science disciplines in social studies learning in secondary schools, especially junior high schools and MTs; 2) produce professional social studies prospective teacher who have a critical view, think comprehensively in social studies education and always use scientific elements to provide professional services to students in dealing with everyday problems; 3) produce social studies prospective teacher responsive to daily problems such as diversity (multicultural), environmental problems, authority and power abuse, etc., and have expertise in assessing these issues in an integrated manner in social studies at schools. To achieve this goal, lectures in the Social Studies Education Study Program comply with the Social Sciences Education Curriculum which integrates social studies subject areas that do not use social science disciplines. In addition, the students of this study program are also equipped with integrated and deepening courses on certain issues that develop in society such as the environment, population, pluralism and anti-corruption education. In addition to the Bachelor program, Social Studies Education also runs Masters and doctoral program. PIPS Study Program is accredited A by BAN PT.
6. Resort and Leisure Management Study Program (MRL)
The MRL study program was established in 2015. The Resort & Leisure Management study program covers aspects of tourism management, planning and development, especially in the area of Resort & Leisure. This study program organizes teaching and learning processes for undergraduate level, in which it examines and develops knowledge and practice courses related to tourism aspects including natural, economic and socio-cultural resources as a basic concept of tourism development. The program covers a wide range of tourism aspects, but are specific in the area of Resort and Leisure management. They are also equipped with theories and practical involvement to develop resort and leisure themes and concepts while still pay attention to economic and sustainable principles based on community, culture and religion.
The Resort & Leisure Management Study Program not only prepares its graduates to become a manager in a tourism company but also guides its graduates to be able to create vacancies / job opportunities. Academically, the graduates are directed to understand tourism feasibility, tourism spatial planning, tourism business management, accommodation and transportation management, as well as basic tourism entrepreneurial skills through education, training and field practice. MRL graduates must have an understanding of tourism knowledge both nationally and internationally in order to plan, manage and develop resorts & leisure based on scientific and professional principles. Graduates hold a Bachelor of Tourism (S.Par). This study program is accredited A by BAN PT.
7. Catering Industry Management Study Program (MIK)
This study program was established in 2015. The Vision of Catering Industry Management Study Program is to become a pioneering and superior study program in the field of research-based Catering Management. The curriculum is designed in such a way as to produce graduates who are able to plan, manage and develop food and beverage business professionally. Most of the graduates work in the tourism industry, especially in the hospitality, catering and restaurant industries. Graduates hold a Bachelor of Tourism (S.Par). The BAN PT accredited B for MIK Study Program. The three tourism study programs of MRL, MPP and MIK, have also received international recognition from TedQual UNWTO.
8. Tourism Marketing Management Study Program (MPP)
Another Study Programs that develop tourism, besides MRL and MIK are Tourism Marketing Management. This study program prepares graduates to work in the tourism sector as an industry, especially in the field of marketing. The main focus of the Tourism Marketing Management Study Program is the management of tourism marketing, especially the analysis of the internal and external tourism marketing environment, development, implementing and evaluating tourism implementation strategies to support competitive and sustainable tourism development. Graduates of the three tourism study programs have a Bachelor of Tourism (S.Par.) Degree. In the three tourism study programs (MRL, MPP and MIK) periodically (biennially) International Seminar on Tourism (ISOT) is held. The three tourism study programs were established through a 2015 UPI Chancellor's Decree. MPP is accredited A by BAN PT. Tourism Marketing Management Study Program hold a credit transfer program, to several universities in Malaysia and South Korea
9. General Education Department (DPU)
The General Education Department fosters general courses, including
Religious Education, Seminar on Religious Education, Pancasila, Sports,
Arts, and Indonesian Language for all UPI students. The difference
between the MKDU Department and other departments is that the General
Education Department provides lecture services and guidance for all UPI
students. This department has the main goal of establishing scholar both
educational (teacher and non-teacher) and non-educational fields.
10. Islamic Religious Education Study Program
Islamic Education Study Program (IPAI) has been operating Since the Academic year 2007/2008,. The vision is becoming as a center for the study and development of educational theories and practices originating from Al-Quran and Al-Hadith, as an enactment of UPI as an educational, scientific, and religious campus. The purpose of this study program is to strengthen the propaganda of Islam on campus, produce creative-innovative PAI teachers and develop Islamic education. Students who will take the admission test are required to have at least-four-juzz Qur'an memorization. Most graduates became Islamic Religious Education Teachers in various education units. This study program is accredited A by BAN PT.
11. Communication Science Study Program/ Department
Communication Science Study Program was established on May 20, 2011. The department aims to produce communication scholars and communication science experts who are able to develop communication science through educations, research, and community service and disseminate it to the public. Graduates hold a Bachelor of Communication Science (S.I.Kom). Public appreciation of the Communication Studies Program is increasingly high. In the last 5 years, the applicants occupy the top five positions at UPI. During the initial accreditation, Communication Studies Study Program obtained a level of accreditation B. Since 2019, Communication Studies Study Program has been accredited by BAN PT with rank A. For a long time, some of the students of Communication Studies Study Program joined the credit transfer program to Mara Technology University Malaysia. All Communication Studies students, before conducting the undergraduate examination, are required to have a certificate of professional competence.
12. Sociology Education Study Program
The Sociology Education Study Program is the first Study Program in West Java that prepares prospective educators who have pedagogical, personality, social, and professional competencies in the field of Sociology. With this competency, it is expected that graduates will be able to play a maximum role in developing sociology learning in schools. In addition, graduates are also expected to have taken part in solving social and cultural problem that have often arisen such as conflicts, fights, irregularities and other social problems. Every two years, the Sociology Education Study Program organizes the International Conference on Sociology Education (UPI ICSE). Sociology Education Study Program is accredited A by BAN PT.
13. Geography Information Science Study Program (SAIG)
At present, the development of geospatial technology and the use of geographic-based information technology are so fast that it requires an innovation and development in the form of higher education institutions that accommodate the rapid development of geospatial technology; the establishment of Geographic Information Science Study Program. The Geographical Information Science Study Program (SaIG) produces bachelor of geographic information as professionals in the field of geographic information science. The study program is expected to contribute practically (application of the field of science) in solving territorial problems such as mapping natural disasters, exploiting of natural resources, changing global and local environments, selecting locations for various regional planning interests, unitary issues and national unity, and nationalism. Graduates of the SaIG study program are projected to work in government agencies such as the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), the Ministry of Public Works, the National Land Board (BPN), and other government agencies that need personnel in the field of mapping. In addition, graduates can also work in private mapping agencies. SAIG Study Program was established on February 23, 2018. Graduates are awarded Bachelor of Geography (S.Geo).
14. Tourism Education Study Program
The Tourism Education Study Program was established on May 8, 2019 based on Rector's Decree No. 4092 / UN40 / HK / 2019. The establishment of the Tourism Education Study Program starts with the idea of ??tourism lecturers in the Faculty of Social Sciences Education as the Development Team for the Tourism Education Study Program (SK No. 2021 / UN.40 / A2 / DL / 2018). It was motivated by the fact most teaching staff in Tourism Vocational Schools does not have a tourism education background and there is no LPTK that specifically prepares professional tourism teachers. The focuses of the course are divided into two aspects, namely the pedagogical aspects and the scientific aspects of tourism. Pedagogical aspects are reflected in educational subjects such as curriculum and learning, education management, learning strategies in the field of study and so on. While the scientific aspects of tourism are reflected in the subject of ticket and travel documents, food and nutrition, marketing communications and so on. Tourism Education Study Program Alumni have such competencies as (1) educators at the vocational high school level (SMK) who are able to plan, implement, evaluate and develop learning based on science, character, and innovation to improve education quality; (2) In addition to being an educator, alumni of the Tourism Education Study Program also have competence as researchers who are able to solve learning problems produce established learning innovations for improving the quality vocational high schools education; (3) and as a practitioner and Educational Consultant at the level of the secondary education unit in the fields of education management, extra-curricular coaches, learning implementation evaluators, media developers and learning resources for tourism.
Learning Process
The lecture process is carried out in the form of face-to-face class, field lectures, practicum and response. Class meetings are conducted by senior lecturers assisted by assistants. Assistant lecturers are aimed at helping students master lecture material (facts, concepts, generalizations, theories, procedures, or skills). Response activities are carried out in small groups of 10 to 15 people. Questions and answers, exercises, and completion of certain tasks are the main activities. Students are directed to work in a friendly atmosphere and free from all forms of class tension. The lecture is related to the assignment of a particular subject, it can also be specifically designed. Generally, field lectures are conducted off campus at certain times and do not interfere with regular lectures. Field lectures are intended to provide opportunities for students to interact directly with the object of study and the introduction to the community more closely. Other activities that must be followed by students are laboratory activities. Students are trained to use various equipment and develop various models for the educational process at school with the help of supervisors, assistants, and laboratory assistants. Completion of course assignments is a major activity and is one of the graduation assessment requirements. Students are accustomed to making papers, book reports, or other academic assignments well.Counseling guidance is also given to students to help their study problems. Students can consult regularly with academic supervisors (PA) from taking credit to discussing semester exam results. Personal issues that are thought to influence their study can also be discussed together with the supervisor. Each student is required to be present in lectures, absence is only tolerated as much as 20%. In addition to attendance, students are required to read required books available in the Faculty library.FPIPS students are expected to not only deal with the problem of developing scientific thinking skills, but are also expected to train themselves in student organizations.
Lecturers & Students
At present, FPIPS has 138 lecturers, consisting of 25 Professors, 76 people holding doctorates degree and 62 lecturers with master degrees. At present, 15 lecturers are completing their Doctoral Program. FPIPS lecturers are mostly national university graduates, but there are also some overseas graduates, such as from Han Kuk University of Foreign Studies, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Universitat Leipzig, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, University of Malaya and La Trobe University. The number of FPIPS students based on data up to 2018/2019 was 4 726 people. In 2019, as many as 26 FPIPS students took credit transfer programs to several foreign universities; 9 students from the Tourism Marketing Management Study Program, 3 from Communication Studies and 1 from Resort and Leisure Management, and 13 students from Religious Education Islam. Some foreign universities for FPIPS student credit transfer programs are the Malaysian University of Technology Mara, Siam University Thailand, Prince Sonkla University Thailand, Daegu Catholic University South Korea, and Suez Canal University Egypt.
Facilities, Infrastructure and Cooperation
The Faculty of Social Sciences Education occupies the Moh.Numan Somantri Building from the 1st to the 6th floor. The 1st floor is entirely used for the faculty leadership office, academic administration and student welfare services. The second floor is used as a management room for study program leaders and departments, as well as academic services for students in accordance with their respective study programs. The 3rd floor is used as a lecturer workspace. Floors 4, 5 and 6, all used as lecture halls. The Moh Numan Somantri building is also supplemented with a mosque, a Micro Teaching Laboratory and an auditorium, as well as three computer laboratory rooms. FPIPS UPI is the initiator of the establishment of a cooperation forum for FPIPS and Social Sciences departments throughout Indonesia called the FPIPS / JPIPS Communication Forum throughout Indonesia. One of communication forum activities is a national seminar and annual scientific meeting (PIT), and the publication of the Journal of Social Sciences Education (JPIS) p-ISSN 0854-5251 and e-ISSN 2540-7694. JPIS, published periodically twice (June and December) in a year. JPIS is currently nationally accredited by Sprott 3 (S3). FPIPS carry out institutional collaboration, with domestic and foreign institutions, with fellow universities and companies. Several domestic universities that collaborate with study programs at FPIPS include Palangkaraya University, Sriwijaya University, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University, Lambung Mangkurat University, Sebelas Maret University, Padjadjaran University and Gadjah Mada University. International collaboration with foreign universities include Malaysia Mara University of Technology, Sultan Idris Malaysia University of Education, Multimedia Malaysia University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Siam University Thailand, Prince Sonkla University Thailand, Yonsei University and Daegu Catholic University in South Korea, Suez Canal Egypt University, Nara Prefectual University Japan, The University of Social Sciences and Humanities Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh and Monash University Australia. Several domestic companies that have collaborated with FPIPS study programs include PT ASABA, Esri Indonesia, PT Narcon, PT Kompas Navigasi, and PT Citra Cipta Mandiri. Other institutions, outside universities and companies that collaborate with study programs at FPIPS, include the Association for Sociology, Geography, History, Civics and Social Studies Programs, Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning, the Geospatial Information Agency, the Assembly of Geospatial Information, People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Corruption Eradication Commission of the Republic of Indonesia.
